Defined Academy Training Center

The Defined Academy Training Center provides school and district partners with in-person professional learning opportunities at our training facility in Northbrook, IL. Led by leaders at Defined, participants will engage with like-minded colleagues from across the country in developing critical knowledge and skills in support of High-Quality Project Based Learning (HQPBL).

Don't Miss Our HQPBL Leadership Workshop!

The Defined Academy Training Center is offering a 3-day in-person HQPBL Leadership Workshop from April 23rd-25th, 2024. This workshop is designed to support educators in leveraging the HQPBL framework to shift culture and strengthen teaching practices.

Cohort members will engage in learning about each of the six HQPBL criteria and how they can be used to improve the student experience while expanding upon Defined Learning performance tasks. Participants will learn new strategies for planning tasks and projects, laying a solid foundation that will bring High-Quality PBL to life.

Cohort participants will also walk away earning three Defined micro-credentials and a PBL Champion certificate of achievement for 25 PD hours.


HQPBL Leadership Cohort Agenda:

  • Virtual Pre-Session: (Optional) Overview of Defined Learning and Q & A (45 mins.)
  • Day 1: Intellectual Challenge & Accomplishment and Public Product (9am-3pm/Lunch Provided)
  • Day 2: Collaboration and Authenticity (9am-3pm/Lunch Provided)
  • Day 3: Reflection & Project Management (9am-11:30am)

Follow-up includes 1 virtual support session:

  • Support Session: 1 month after In-Person Workshop (1 hour)

Who: Teachers and Instructional Coaches who have experience implementing Defined Learning performance tasks; Administrators accompanying their team are welcome as well.

Price: $995 per person which includes a catered lunch, 3 Defined micro-credentials and a certificate for 25 PD hours

Please note that there is a 20-person limit. 



Cohort participants will build-upon their PBL expertise by expanding their knowledge and skills in relation to Defined Learning performance tasks and aligning with the High Quality Project Based Learning (HQPBL) framework. This will include:

  • Increasing educator's understanding of the HQPBL criteria;
  • Experiencing HQPBL teaching strategies;
  • Exploring and interacting with Defined Learning planning documents for the learner experience in classrooms;
  • Reflecting on implementation and determining next steps.

John Larmer

John Larmer

John Larmer is a Senior PBL Advisor for Defined, an education consultant, and a writer. He was a key builder of the Buck Institute for Education, serving as editor in chief, director of publications, and director of product development. He co-developed the models to define project-based learning, including the HQPBL framework and Gold Standard PBL. John’s works have been published in 8 languages and are used to guide educators across the globe.


Kristy Lathrop

Kristy is a Professional Learning Consultant for Defined,  a PBL facilitator, coach, and author who supports schools all over the world. She is motivated by a belief that we live in a world that is project-based, and every student deserves to develop content knowledge and skills through PBL for success in life.

Heather W.

Heather Wertman

Heather is the Director of Educational Collaboration and Learning at Defined and an experienced PBL practitioner and leader who is also an expert in using the Defined resources to bring PBL to life in classrooms across the country. She is passionate about equipping educators with strategies and tools to create environments in which all learners can thrive.
